Have you ever observed what holds your interest in a movie, play, game or in a cartoon; the voice. Voice over is one attribute that makes listeners or viewers get engrossed in what is going on screen or on air.

Voice over is one of the most important element in any of the art piece that not only helps in better understanding of the audience but also enhances the visual impact of a movie, drama, or an advertisement.
What is Voice over? It is a production technique where a voice that is not part of the narrative is used in a radio, television production, film-making, theater, or other presentations. The voice-over may be spoken by someone who appears elsewhere in the production or by a specialist called voice over artist.
Voice over can be used in a creative piece in many different formats as required by the script. It can be used as a character device where a character from the movie itself narrates the story but also sometimes comments on some relevant action in voice-over. This technique is common in use.

Then comes is the creative device where the narrator or voice artist is not the part of the action and only lends his or her voice for a particular sequence to give a clearer idea to the audiences about what is going on screen.

Educational or descriptive device is commonly used in History and Discovery channels where a voice explains everything going on screen. Informative technique is used in advertisements to give product descriptions.

The decision of how a voice over is to used depends upon the screen the demand of the director. Usually it is used as a creative device that helps viewers and listeners have a look at the other side of the subject as well.


To find an apt for your creative piece you have to toil hard. Be contact with talent promoting companies. In times of need they will help you find the right person in the shortest time. Another way to hunt an appropriate voice is to take auditions in colleges and institutions. It will be tiring and costly but probability of finding good talent is high.

Before finalizing make clarify them about the working hours, payment patterns and other requirements. It’s better to make a contract and get it signed.

In the history voice over were just used in amusement rides, stage shows and puppet shows but with the upcoming of technology driven cinema including animation; voice over have become integral part of movies and television productions owing to which loads of new voice over artist have come up in the industry one of them is Kurt Kelly.
